Colour Codes And Symbols
Please review and fimilarise yourself with the below colours and symbols that are important to know when dealing with leads or multiboxes.
Class I Earthed Equipment symbol:
Class II Double Insulated symbol:
The 3 conductors are called the following and are coloured as:
| Old (Pre?) | Current | |
| Earth | Green | Green/Yellow |
| Phase/Live/Active | Red | Brown |
| Neutral | Black | Blue |
NOTE: Both Phase and Neutral are essentially live conductors – the neutral will normally have the same amount of power flowing in it as the Phase.
You can also see below two diagrams illustrating how these conductors would look in an actual plug or IEC lead. This is just for the purpose of helping you understand the theory behind how electricity works.

Complete the exercise below by matching the conductor to the correct colour.
