Metrotest Free Introductory Test and Tag Training
Metrotest is a little different when it comes to training compared to others— we offer several free test and tag training options. But what do we mean by free, and what’s actually included?
Why offer free training?
Simply put, we wanted to provide an opportunity for people to explore test and tag without needing to commit hundreds of dollars to a course (or thousands for a tester) they’re not yet sure about.
That’s where our Bronze Level Course comes in. For several years now, Metrotest has offered a free introductory level to test and tag training — something no one else provides.
This gives potential learners a chance to “dip their toes in” before deciding whether test and tag is right for them. It’s important to note, however, that this free course is an introduction only and shouldn’t be treated as a qualification that leads to full competency.
In 2025, almost everything is online — but not everyone enjoys learning that way. While our online options offer excellent value and the same quality training, some people prefer the hands-on experience of a face-to-face course. The Bronze course helps you or your employees figure out which format suits you best.
If you decide in-person learning is a better fit, we also offer full day, face-to-face courses across New Zealand. You can find all available locations by visiting our homepage and filtering by region.

What if I buy a full online course and it’s not for me?
If you complete the free introductory training and then move on to a paid course but later decide it’s not right for you — that’s okay! You can switch to an in-person course and simply pay the difference in price. Since our online courses are significantly cheaper, you’ll only need to cover the gap — no double-charging.
What’s included in the free test and tag training?
Our Bronze introductory course covers the essentials of test and tag, including topics such as:
- Safety around electricity
- Relevant legislation and standards
- Different classes of appliances
- What a PAT tester is and how it works
To make things even better, the course includes a basic PAT (Portable Appliance Tester) simulator based on a real Metrotest device — the EasiPAT 10. This allows you to practice using a simulated tester as you learn.
Do you offer any other free training?
Believe it or not, yes! We’ve also launched our free Test and Tag Health and Safety Manager’s Course.
This course is designed to help health and safety managers — or any workplace managers for that matter— understand what’s required to keep their company both compliant and safe. You can find it under our Online Courses page.
I’ve done the free Bronze course — what next?
To become fully competent in testing and tagging, you’ll need to complete our Silver and Gold courses.
At the end of the Gold course, you’ll take a one-on-one practical assessment with one of our experienced, qualified electrical trainers.
We’ve made it easy — simply select our Bundle Package, and you’ll have everything you need to progress from beginner to certified competency.
