How to Gain Test and Tag Competency!
When it comes to who can and can’t test and tag, it all comes down to one key question:
Is the person deemed competent to test and tag?
Competency can be proven in several ways, as outlined in the main standard for testing and tagging — AS/NZS 3760:2022. However, the easiest and most robust way to prove competency is by completing official test and tag training — and that’s where Metrotest, the largest Kiwi-owned and operated test and tag training provider comes in.
Metrotest has been training Kiwis for nearly three decades. We know what it takes to ensure someone is truly competent to test and tag. With our own dedicated testing division performing millions of tests over the years, we don’t just teach it — we do it every day.
Through Metrotest you can gain competency in two ways:

Let’s break each down as your roadmap to competency.
In-Person Training
In-person training is exactly as it sounds — you attend the course in person, complete your training, and leave competent to test and tag your own equipment.
You’ll start by signing up for a course near you. Metrotest offers the widest range of training locations across New Zealand, all listed on our homepage.
Once you’ve signed up, we’ll send you all course details — then it’s just a matter of turning up on the day, ready to learn.
If you already have a PAT tester, feel free to bring it along; your trainer will guide you through using your specific unit.
After completing the theory component, your trainer will conduct a practical assessment to ensure you can safely and correctly perform testing and tagging.
Upon passing this assessment, your trainer will take your photo for your Metrotest ID card, which is issued once you’ve completed the course.
This card is part of Metrotest’s voluntary licensing scheme, trusted by small and large businesses alike for decades.
And that’s it — you’re ready to get started! You can use your own tester or hire one from Metrotest if needed.
Online Training
The roadmap to competency through online training is slightly different — but covers the same material and practical skills, just in a flexible, self-paced format.
You’ll begin by enrolling in our Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels:
- Bronze is free and lets you dip your toes into online learning to see if it suits you.
- Silver and Gold build on each other to develop your full competency.
Once enrolled, you can study at your own pace, whenever it suits you — no pressure, no deadlines.
You don’t need to own a PAT tester to take the course. We include an interactive PAT simulator, and we can also send you a tester as part of your training package to complete the practical assessment.
When you’ve finished the theory components, you’ll complete a one-on-one practical assessment via Zoom with one of our qualified, experienced electrical trainers. You’ll have their full, undivided attention — no distractions, no waiting on others — and you can take as much time as you need.
After successfully completing your assessment, you’ll be deemed competent to test and tag, and receive both your photo ID card and certificate — just like with in-person training.
